Before you apply

Before you apply for a Statement on a Foreign Vocational Qualification: Check if you meet all the criteria to receive a positive statement. Collect all the documents. Now you are ready to apply.

Criteria

Criteria to receive a positive statement:

  • Duration of the vocational training: minimum of 2 full-time school years
  • Vocational training was successfully completed
  • Vocational training is recognized in the country of training

A statement will also list criteria that are not met or are not fully met. You can only use a positive statement to apply for a residence title.

We cannot tell you in advance if you will receive a positive statement. You can easily check the criteria yourself:

Documents

You need the following documents to apply for a Statement on a Foreign Vocational Qualification:

  • Certificate of completion
    Official document to confirm that the vocational training was completed (for example: diploma, secondary school graduation certificate stating the profession, trade license etc.)
  • Transcript of records
    for the entire vocational training
  • Identity document
    Passport oder identity card

Are you a national of a member state of the EU, the European Economic Area, or Switzerland?

Statements on a Foreign Vocational Qualification are not issued to nationals of a member state of the EU, the European Economic Area, or Switzerland. This includes dual citizens. Use the website Anerkennung in Deutschland to find the responsible authority for your occupation.

How to apply

This is how to submit your application for a Statement on a Foreign Vocational Qualification.

  1. Create an account

    Create an account on the ZAB website. You need a BundID account to set up the ZAB account. Go to our FAQ to find out how to create an account.

  2. Prepare your documents

    Collect the documents you need for your application. Scan the documents. Save the scans as PDF files.

  3. Fill out the application form

    Fill out the online application form. Upload your documents. You can save and return to your application at any point.

  4. Pay the fees

    Once you submit your application, you can immediately pay the €150 fee online. You can find your notification of fees as a message in My Account.

After you apply

  • The 2-month processing time starts once you have submitted all required documents and we have received the fee in full.
  • If we need additional information or documents, we will send you a message in My Account. You will be notified via email as well.
  • You can check your application status in My Account at any time.
  • As soon as your Statement on a Foreign Vocational Qualification has been completed and can be downloaded, we will send you a message in My Account. You will be notified via email as well.
